National Clean-Up-Day 2019

13-14 September 2019 The 3rd National CLEAN-UP-DAY

The National Clean-Up Day is part of the international movement “Let’s Do it!” that was found in 2008 to tackle environmental problems related to mismanaged waste with the collective cleaning actions. Switzerland, joind by more than 169 countries, participates in this movement.

In collaboration with the Maisons de Quartier
– Participants: Individuals, Associations, Schools, Entreprises
– Local actions: Cleaning of buildings’ bases, adjacent streets and sidewalks with eco-friendly products, followed by flowers and shrubs/bushes’ planting.
– Place: Quartiers
– Global Action: Cultural and eco-sportive actions, plogging actions (1), organized in collaboration with the neighborhood sport centers.
– Place: la Plaine de Plainpalais

Plogging is a combination of jogging with picking up litter (Swedish: plocka upp). A jogger is supposed to be equipped with a waste bag to collect the waste that is found on the jogging pass. This exercise allows to variate the body movements by adding bending, squats and stretching to the main exercice.

The Result of the Actions

Madam, Sir,

On September 13-14, together, we celebrated the 3rd National Clean-Up Day by joining together to show our love and dedication to our city, our country and our planet. The mobilization of citizens – from the youngest to the oldest, businesses and communities was remarkable and the willingness to lend a hand to safeguard the cleanliness of Geneva particularly impressive.

The eco-sports actions (the plogging and the march against the cigarette butts) took place in a very good environment, supported by the warm and sunny weather.

For a day and a half, we collected on eight courses using a fine comb 57’300 cigarette butts, 3’480 kg of plastic (ie packaging, bottles, lighters and objects), 289 cans, aluminum sheets and caps, 164 pieces of chewing gum, 337 bottles and glass objects.

The actions of the plogging have been so successful that we will continue, at the request of many participants, to organize them every week for businesses and individuals. For dates and locations, please visit our website, under the heading: Eco-Sports Greetings.

We would like to thank you wholeheartedly for your participation and your commitment. Indeed, without you, nothing would have been possible. In this way, we are deeply grateful for the time and energy you have devoted to making these two days a real success!

Already, we invite you to book on your agenda on Friday 11th and Saturday 12th September 2020 for the 4th National Clean-Up Day and say “see you next year!”.

Together, and with simple gestures, we are a force that will make it possible to reduce incivility and restore Geneva’s brilliance and beauty.

With all our partners – of which you will find below the list, and to which we express here our warmest thanks and our gratitude, receive, Madam, Sir, our united greetings.

We can not ignore our authorities, our partners and local producers who have made these two days possible, by their kindness, their support, their confidence and their presence. We express to them our immense gratitude. They are: Ville et Canton de Genève, SIG, EFF, ASL, EDD, CIPRET, SportiGeneve, Union des Maraîchers Genevois, Ferme Bieri, Arthus & Hubert, Domaines des Graves; Serres des Marais SA.
